Distance Measurement & Collision Prevention with SYMEO Radar Technology

Different challenges—one reliable technology: SYMEO radar sensors.

Can two vehicles safely pass side-by-side?
Is there a risk of crane-to-crane collision?
Can two-level overhead cranes overtake each other?
Do you need your plant to be automatic or semi-automatic?
Do you need to restrict crane travel in a specific area for maintenance (a “no-go zone”)?
How much material is stored in your warehouse?

In demanding industrial environments, these critical questions require a solution that is reliable, safe, and resistant to harsh conditions.
KIEPE Electric S.p.A., operating internationally under the KINEXTEC brand, supplies SYMEO radar sensors to ensure stable operation across a wide range of applications—indoors and outdoors, as part of its anti‑collision and positioning systems portfolio.

KIEPE Electric offers next-generation SYMEO radar solutions that enable precise, reliable contactless positioning for many automated and semi-automated processes. These sensors provide real-time distance and speed data, even in severe operating conditions.
Companies across multiple industrial sectors benefit from SYMEO radar because it provides a robust foundation for efficient, uninterrupted operations.

Typical positioning applications

SYMEO safety radar sensors can be used effectively for:

  • crane positioning
  • overhead crane positioning
  • trolley and hoist/hook positioning
  • rail-guided vehicles
  • container storage positioning in warehouses and yards

Reliable Radar Positioning Technology (RTLS) — Indoors and Outdoors

SYMEO radar sensors deliver highly accurate object positioning without physical contact, both indoors and outdoors. They are insensitive to:

  • heavy rain
  • fog
  • smoke
  • pollution
  • noise
  • wind
  • vibrations
  • direct sunlight

SYMEO Real-Time Locating Systems (RTLS) use patented LPR® radar technology. Local radar positioning systems operate in the license-free ISM band, and can run simultaneously with radio data networks (e.g., Wi‑Fi) without restrictions.
All SYMEO positioning radars feature a rugged design, are easy to install, and can be quickly commissioned and configured via a modern WebUI interface.

Robust radar distance sensors for long-range measurement

Next-generation SYMEO radar sensors enable precise long-range distance measurement for many industrial applications.
For example, the position of gantry cranes, overhead cranes, and quayside cranes such as:

  • STS (Ship-to-Shore) cranes
  • RTG (Rubber Tyred Gantry) cranes

can be accurately detected by installing only two LPR radar sensors, such as:

  • LPR-1D24
  • LPR-1DHP-291

With only two sensors, you can measure distance in real time with centimeter-level accuracy across ranges up to 1000 m, as enabled by systems such as the LPR®‑1D24 positioning and anti‑collision radar.
Additionally, using one sensor and a reflector, distance can be measured with high accuracy for many applications.

Preventing crane collisions requires continuous monitoring of distance and position. KIEPE Electric S.p.A. provides solutions for multiple applications based on SYMEO LPR radar sensors, including:

  • Real-time distance measurement with accuracy up to ±5 mm, enabling warning systems such as traffic lights or audible alarms
  • Precise detection of distances and speeds (relative or absolute) between two sensors, allowing alerts at predefined thresholds (e.g., via optional relays)
  • PLC integration for easy parameterization to generate warning and stop signals, prevent collisions, and define restricted travel zones (e.g., “no-fly zones / no-go zones”)

How accurate are SYMEO radar sensors?

SYMEO LPR® radar sensors provide real-time distance measurements with accuracy up to ±5 mm, depending on the application and configuration.

Can SYMEO radar sensors operate in harsh environments?

Yes. SYMEO radar technology is resistant to rain, fog, smoke, dust, vibration and sunlight, making it suitable for indoor and outdoor industrial use.

How many sensors are needed for crane positioning?

In many applications, only two radar sensors are sufficient to measure distance and position accurately over ranges up to 1000 m. Some setups work with one sensor and a reflector.

Can SYMEO radar systems be integrated with PLCs?

Yes. KIEPE Electric supports PLC integration for alarms, stop signals, collision prevention and the creation of restricted operating zones.
